Sanskrit is the sacred language of India, in which mantras and scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gītā and the Yoga Sūtra are written. “saṃskṛta” means “well-formed, refined, polished”.

This workshop offers you the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of Sanskrit and learn the basics of this fascinating language – no prior knowledge required!

What to Expect
We will explore the alphabet and learn the letters in their Western form (transliteration) as well as in the traditional devanāgarī script.
Using yoga terms like āsana names, numbers, and philosophical concepts, we will practice reading and writing.
We will chant mantras together and learn their meanings and correct pronunciation.

If you’re interested, you can continue to deepen your knowledge through guided self-study afterward.

Benefits of Learning Sanskrit
A deeper understanding of yoga philosophy
A more profound experience when chanting mantras
The ability to read original texts
A broadening of your cultural horizon

The workshop is based on the educational approach of Dr. Zoë Slatoff, a renowned Sanskrit teacher who has published a textbook focused primarily on yoga practitioners. I have studied Sanskrit with Zoë, both through the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies and in private lessons.
