I have been studying it with great joy since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The book <em>Yog\u0101vat\u0101ra\u1e47am<\/em> by my teacher Zo\u00eb Slatoff and the online courses she offers through the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies are, in my experience, an ideal way for yoga practitioners to begin learning Sanskrit.<\/p>\n<p>In her book, Zo\u00eb uniquely combines the traditional approach to learning Sanskrit\u2014through mantras, translations, and chanting\u2014with an academic approach. So the creator god Brahma is said to have created Sanskrit first, and then through the power of the sounds of Sanskrit this universe. According to another myths, the wise seers first perceived the mantras, and only as a second step derived Sanskrit from the mantras.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to tradition, it is therefore extremely important to pronounce vedic mantras in the correct intonation for them to be effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me personally, Sanskrit has through its sounds a direct effect on the body \u2013 independent of the understanding of the individual words, just through the vibration. Often, I have the impression that deep down the meaning has arrived long before my mind is able to grasp it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>The language Sanskrit<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanskrit belongs to the indoeuropean languages, just like English, German, Greek and Latin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its importance lies in the fact that already the eldest hymns still known today, the vedas, were sung in Sanskrit (\u201cvedic Sanskrit\u201d, as of about 1500 B.C.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanskrit was systematized relatively early, by\u00a0<\/span><em>Pan\u012b\u1e47\u012b<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Alphabet_of_Sanskrit_Transliteration\"><b>International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration<\/b>\u00a0(<b>IAST<\/b><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Alphabet_of_Sanskrit_Transliteration\">)<\/a>\u00a0is considered to be the academic standard. It has been used for more than 100 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In order to represent sounds that have no correspondence in the latin alphabet, so-called diacritical signs are added to the letters, i.e. the hyphen above the a, i and u means that these vowels are pronounced two times as long as those without the hyphen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><em>Devan\u0101gar\u012b<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally, Sanskrit was only passed on orally. Still today, there are priests who argue against the written transfer of for instance the vedic hymns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, these days it is written in different scriptures, since about a millennium most often in <\/span>Devan\u0101gar\u012b.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201eDevan\u0101gar\u012b\u201c is composed of the words \u201edeva\u201c (god, gods) and \u201en\u0101gar\u012b\u201c (city, area, residence). According to Zo\u00eb, a possible translation is \u201cscripture of the gods\u201d. It is often also translated as divine city writing.<\/p>\n<p>Devan\u0101gar\u012b <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is written in syllables, e.g. each letter represents a syllable. There are 49 letters that are put in a certain order according to whether they are a vowel or a consonant and where within the mouth the sound is originating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Germans, pronounciation of the transliteration is relatively straight forward, with a few exceptions. For English speakers, it is important to learn the exact pronounciation of all letters, as there are many differences. So soll der Sch\u00f6pfungsgott Brahma das Sanskrit zuerst geschaffen haben, und dann erst mit Hilfe der Kraft der Kl\u00e4nge des Sanskrit dieses Universum.\n\nNach einem weiteren Mythos haben die weisen Seher zun\u00e4chst die heiligen Mantren erkannt, und dann daraus erst das Sanskrit hergeleitet. Im vedischen Sanskrit kommt es nach der \u00dcberlieferung dementsprechend darauf an, die Mantren exakt von der Intonation auszusprechen, damit sie ihre Wirkung entfalten.\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.6.5\" hover_enabled=\"0\" sticky_enabled=\"0\"]\n\nF\u00fcr mich wirkt das Sanskrit durch seine Kl\u00e4nge unmittelbar auf den K\u00f6rper - <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unabh\u00e4ngig vom Verst\u00e4ndnis der W\u00f6rter, einfach durch seine Schwingung<\/span>. H\u00e4ufig habe ich den Eindruck, dass die Bedeutung in der Tiefe angekommen ist, bevor mein Verstand begreift.\n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.4.8\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.4.8\"]\n\n<strong>Sanskrit<\/strong>\n\nDas Sanskrit geh\u00f6rt - wie Deutsch, Englisch, Griechisch und Latein - zu den indoeurop\u00e4ischen Sprachen.\n\nSeine besondere Bedeutung liegt darin, dass bereits die \u00e4ltesten bis heute erhaltenen Hymnen, die Veden, in Sanskrit verfasst wurden (\"vedisches Sanskrit\", ab ca. 1500 v.Chr.).\n\nDas Sanskrit wurde relativ&nbsp;fr\u00fch systematisiert.&nbsp;<em>Panini&nbsp;<\/em>verfasste ca. im 5. Jahrhundert v. Es gibt auch heute noch Priester, die sich gegen die schriftliche Weitergabe beispielsweise der vedischen Hymnen beispielsweise aussprechen.\n\nDennoch wird es inzwischen in verschiedenen Schriften geschrieben, am h\u00e4ufigsten seit ca. 1.000 Jahren in&nbsp;<em>Devan\u0101gar\u012b.&nbsp;<\/em>\n\nDas Wort \u201eDevan\u0101gar\u012b\u201c ist aus den W\u00f6rtern \u201edeva\u201c (Gott, G\u00f6tter) und \u201en\u0101gar\u012b\u201c (Stadt, Bereich, Residenz) zusammengesetzt. Eine m\u00f6gliche \u00dcbersetzung ist laut Zo\u00eb \u201eSchrift der G\u00f6tter\u201c. H\u00e4ufig wird es &nbsp;oder auch als \u201eaus der Wohnstatt der G\u00f6tter\u201c \u00fcbersetzt.\n\n<em>Devan\u0101gar\u012b <\/em>ist eine Silbenschrift, d.h. jeder Buchstabe steht f\u00fcr eine Silbe. Es braucht Zeit, viel Geduld, und auch viel Wiederholung.\n\nDas Buch&nbsp;<em>Yog\u0101vat\u0101ra\u1e47am&nbsp;<\/em>meiner Lehrerin und die von ihr \u00fcber das Oxford Center for Hindu Studies angebotenen Online-Kurse sind nach meiner Erfahrung f\u00fcr praktizierende Yogis ein idealer Weg zum Erlernen des Sanskrit. In dem Buch verbindet Zo\u00eb auf meines Wissens einmalige Weise den traditionellen Ansatz zum Erlernen von Sanskrit - \u00fcber Mantren, \u00dcbersetzungen etc. und Chanten - mit dem akademischen Ansatz.
